Cowling
Construction Time 181.25 hours
Date Description Time
03.08.04 Installed Southcos on top cowl and nut plates for bottom cowl. 5.00
03.07.18 Sanded top cowl.  Clecoed cowling to fuselage and cut the cowling edge.  Removed the supporting plate from the prop flange. 5.00
03.07.17 Sanded bottom cowl.  At one place, I sanded completely through the fiberglass (on the top lip of the smile).  That spot was leaning against something.  I repaired this and reapplied micro balloon in some spots.  I also put more micro balloon on the top cowl.  Now, I don't have any epoxy resin left... so I'll try to sand it good for priming. 2.50
03.07.16 Sanded cowling with 80 grit paper on my DeWalt sander.  Put a layer of MicroBalloun. 5.00
03.07.14 Layed up lower lip, repaired layup problem on bottom inlet, reinforced attachment edges with 2 to 3 plies. 3.00
03.07.14 Cut fiberglass around holes, installed stiffeners.  Sanded top and bottom cowl where I'll add some layers, prepared bottom cowl for lower lip seal and for repairs. 6.00
03.07.13 Layed up fiberglass in holes. 4.00
03.07.11 Reworked the mouth and put Sheetrock 20 on all inlets. 1.50
03.07.10 Worked on the ovale openings.  Cut the smile inlet, installed foam, shaped the opening and put spackling.  I chose spackling for the initial fills because it's a very light material and I'm not sure I'll be able to remove it all. 4.00
03.07.09 Installed blue form around the two ovale inlet openings.  Cut and sanded the foam to shape. Put some spackling to fill holes and have a sandable surface. 4.00
03.06.19 Sanded the epoxy put yesterday. Put a second coat of epoxy mix, but this time I used micro balloon.  After seeing this and reflecting on this, I decided that this process will be too long, too heavy and will not turn nice.  I then spent some hours removing all that crap with an air grinder and a dremel (for sanding).  I had to make one repair where I damaged the fiberglass with the grinder.  Then, the garage, plane and myself were due for a major cleanup (because of all the dust generated).  I changed the wrapping on the engine and re-installed the cowling.  I decided that I'm fed-up of working on it and I'll try to progress on the canopy. 8.00
03.06.18 Removed foam spray.  That really did not work!  Went to see Gary Gutshe with the cowling for some advised.  I did not follow what he said and I'm now trying a simple flange to the inlets.  I glued a piece of 1/2" round foam all around the inlets and I put a mix of epoxy glue and cotton dust (flox) to make a form for the flange. 8.00
03.06.17 Bought and applied foam spray behind the three air inlets.  Cleaned up some of the mess. 5.00
03.06.16 NOTHING!  I tried to figure out who to make the air intake openings… tried various ways of molding them and i'm not yet satisfied. 9.00
03.06.15 Made lip to join lower and upper cowls together.  Reinforcement will be needed in the side of the lower cowl. 3.50
03.06.14 Installed cowling on plane to see fit and started to clamp (cleco) sides together in preparation for laying up the overlap joggles. 0.75
03.06.13 De-molded the cowling.  If I'd do it again, I'd put 6 layers of PVA.  Removing it was difficult because it was too thin. 8.00
03.06.12 Cleaned up the mess from yesterday.  Also tried to make a form for the bottom air intake.  After two attempts, I'm still not happy and I'll try another one tomorrow.  I wanted to have a protruding "mouth", but looking at it, it will not show a nice profile from the side.  I'll keep the intake recessed. 4.00
03.06.11 Layed up the fiberglass. This is a messy job!  I started to prepare the material and the workshop at 7am.  I then got  help from my neighbord and we started mixing epoxy at around 10h30.  While we were quite organized for the first two pieces of cloths, it soon became a mess.  The less than 20 minutes pot life did not help to relax us!  We layed up the last cloth at around 15h30. 8.50
03.06.10 Primed, painted.  Drew the cut and hole lines.  Applied PVA.  Tried to figure how to pre-cut the fiberglass… can't do it. 8.00
03.06.09 Same thing over and over.  Except that I primed two coats thinking I was done.  I also made some practice sheets of fiberglass to see how the PVA works. 10.00
03.06.06 Sanded mold and put primer paint.  And put some more plaster on again. 2.50
03.06.05 Put plaster on… time combined for most of week 15.00
03.05.29 Put plaster on … I can't do much because it needs to dry after application and before sanding.  The time includes the time spent on the 28th.  I also got my Canopy from Todd Canopies.  It's very nice! 3.00
03.05.27 Formed top front of plug.  Made rear lip underneath.  Checked position of holes. Put a layer of joint compound. 5.00
03.05.23 Sanded styrofoam plug 4.00
03.05.22 Installed more styrofoam on bottom.  I still have the deflector left to do. 5.00
03.05.21 Installed styrofoam on top. 6.00
03.05.19 Installed foam on sides.  Installed missing pieces of top skin. Installed a few styrofoam pieces on top. 5.00
03.05.17 Installed foam on front. 3.00
03.05.16 Added to straight wood guides at bottom.  Installed foam on front of cowling 5.00
03.05.15 Continued to work on wood templates. 7.00
03.05.14 Wrapped engine, made and installed spinner back plate, installed top and side wooden templates. Put plastic sheet over cabin 8.00
